Medicare decisions are complex. We take a consult-first approach — understanding your situation before discussing any plan options.

What to expect

What a Medicare consultation can help with

  • Understanding the difference between Medicare coverage categories and what each includes
  • Reviewing your current coverage situation and identifying any gaps or redundancies
  • Discussing enrollment timing and how missing key windows can affect coverage and costs
  • Exploring how Medicare interacts with employer coverage, retiree plans, or VA benefits
  • Understanding how your geographic area, doctors, and prescriptions factor into plan selection
  • Planning ahead for changes in health needs or retirement income over time

General Overview

Medicare coverage categories

The following are general descriptions of Medicare coverage categories. Specific plans, premiums, benefits, and availability can only be discussed after we understand your eligibility and location.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) are offered by private insurance carriers approved by Medicare. They bundle Original Medicare benefits — and often additional benefits — into a single plan. Coverage details, networks, and costs vary significantly by plan and location.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement plans work alongside Original Medicare to help cover some of the out-of-pocket costs that Medicare itself doesn't pay, such as coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles. These are standardized plan types — a licensed agent can help explain what each covers.

Part D Prescription Drug Coverage

Part D plans provide prescription drug coverage and are offered through private insurers. Formularies — the lists of covered drugs — vary between plans. If you take ongoing medications, reviewing the formulary before enrolling is important.

Preparation

What to prepare before a consultation

Having this information ready helps us make the most of your consultation time.

  • Your current health insurance card or plan documents
  • A list of doctors and specialists you currently see
  • A list of your current prescription medications and dosages
  • Your ZIP code (coverage options vary by county)
  • Your Medicare start date or expected eligibility date, if known
